Sunnybank is member of the Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel (AST) program.
Active School Travel promotes clean and green, active and healthy school travel modes such as walking, cycling, scootering, carpooling and public transport. Over the next three years, our school will receive a range of free resources, tools, incursions from Council to enable active travel to and from school.
By choosing to actively travel to school, at least one day a week on our active travel day, we can reduce traffic congestion at the school gate, improve our students’ road safety awareness, create a cleaner environment, and improve our health and fitness. Or if you have to drive, park the car away from the school and actively travel the rest of the way. That’s Park and Stride.
Tips for actively travelling to school
Walk and talk
Walking is an easy way to be active and healthy, and spend more time with family and friends. Walking to school on a regular basis can help your child develop good habits for an active life.
Park and stride
If you live too far away to walk to school, why not drive to the start of an active travel route (as shown of the map below) and walk the rest of your journey? Save fuel and get fit!
Learn to be safe on the road
Regular active travel can help improve your child's road safety awareness and knowledge. Remember to stop, look, listen and think when riding or walking around your neighbourhood.
Mix it up
Try riding a bike or scooter - it's a fun and fast way to travel to school. Make sure your child always wears a helmet, keeps to the footpath and watches for cars coming in and out of driveways.
