"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." ~ Dr Seuss
Our Library is a community hub at Sunnybank State School providing a safe, inclusive and creative space for students, teachers and the community to connect. It is a dynamic, modern and flexible learning centre that incorporates an extensive print and literature collection with spaces for teaching and learning, seminars, meetings and eLearning through digital technologies.
Our Library provides literacy programs and resources extending across all key learning areas. The library staff, in conjunction with classroom teachers, aim to foster a love of reading and the development of information literacy skills. The Teacher Librarian develops computer literacy capabilities with dedicated digital technology activities and coding lessons accessing a wide range of devices. During school time, class groups come to the Library for class borrowing time and also for computer based or literature activities, related to the classroom curriculum.
Opening Hours
The library is open Monday - Friday from 8.30am and during both lunch breaks for borrowing, games, reading and computer access. The Library stays open until 3.15pm on most afternoons for children to borrow books after school.
The Library catalogue is computerised using SmartSuite. Senior students are trained to use the system to return and borrow their resources.
The current borrowing allowances are:
- Preps visit the library daily and can borrow 1 book each day.
- Years 1 to 6 can borrow 2 books for up to 2 weeks.
Children are encouraged to ensure their library books are returned on time. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms on a fortnightly basis. Payment is requested for lost or damaged books and this cost will vary according to the age of the item.
Annual Events
Library events held during the year may include Scholastic Book Club, participating in National Simultaneous Storytime, Sunnybank Reading Challenge and celebrating Book Week with a costume parade and Book Fair.
Book Week Celebrations
Book Week is a children's literature event held in August. During the week the students participate in a range of activities celebrating children's authors and books.
