"It is not true that we have only one life to lead; if we can read, we can live as many more lives and as many kinds of lives as we wish."  ~ S. I. Hayakawa

Our Resource Centre is a modern, flexible learning facility and incorporates an extensive print and literature collection with spaces for teaching and learning, seminars, meetings and eLearning through digital technologies.

The Library provides library and information literacy programs and resources, extending across all key learning areas. These programs, developed by the Teacher-Librarian in conjunction with classroom teachers, aim to foster a love of reading and the development of information literacy skills including technology skills. During school time, class groups come to the Library for class borrowing time and also for Library Activity time. In activity time, the children work with the Teacher-Librarian and the class teacher to complete research, computer based activities or literature activities. All activities are related to the classroom curriculum.

Opening Hours

The library is open Monday - Friday from 8.30am and during both lunch breaks for borrowing, games, reading and computer access.  As the Library stays open until 3.15pm on most afternoons, it is also possible for children to borrow books after school.

The Library catalogue is computerised using SmartSuite. Children are trained to use the system to return and borrow their resources.

The current borrowing allowances are:

  • Preps visit the library daily and can borrow 1 book each day.
  • Years 1 to 6 can borrow 2 books for up to 2 weeks.

Children are encouraged to ensure their library books are returned on time. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms on a fortnightly basis. Payment is requested for lost or damaged books. This cost will vary according to the age of the item.

Annual Events

Library events held during the year may include Scholastic Book Club, Celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime and Literacy and Numeracy Week, Sunnybank Reading Challenge and Literacy Planet Word Mania.

Book Week Celebrations

Book Character Parade

This is a children's literature event held in August. During the week the students participate in a range of activities celebrarting Australian children's authors and books. In celebration of Book Week all students and staff are encouraged to come to school dressed as a book character and prizes are awarded at parade for the most creative costumes. Book Character Parade poster (2).jpgBook Fair

Sunnybank State School hosts a Book Fair during Book Week in August. All students and families are welcome to visit the fair and purchase from a wide range of books, posters and stationery. We run competitions where students have the opportunity to win vouchers to spend at the fair! This event is a fundraiser for the library, where a percentage of the sales is given to the school as commission to purchase current and popular resources.
