Speech-Language Pathology Services

Sunnybank State School is supported by a Department of Education Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). The school is currently purchasing additional SLP service time through funding to support whole school goals.
Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) are professionals with specialist knowledge in speech, language and communication who work to improve literacy, academic and life outcomes of all students. SLPs work collaboratively with the school team to deliver evidence informed speech pathology practices within a whole school approach.
Speech Language Pathologists
• Assess, diagnose and treat a range of communication disorders that affect academic and social success including language, speech, fluency, voice, complex communication needs, literacy and swallowing.
• Contribute to the literacy achievement, and academic success of all students.
• Build capability of the school community in a range of areas relating to speech, language and communication needs.
• Provide culturally competent services to distinguish language disorder within linguistic or dialect differences.
• Collaborate with leadership teams to assist with developing and/or enhancing whole school and whole class practices that are foundational to language and literacy development.
The Speech Language Pathology service supports the school across three layers:
Differentiated teaching – working with the leadership team and teachers around curriculum planning and to provide quality teaching to all students particularly those who have difficulty with communication. This includes supporting class teachers to deliver Robust Vocabulary Instruction, providing whole class narrative instruction to Grade 1 students and whole class oral language and pre-literacy support for Prep students.
Focussed – working with teachers to identify and support students who require additional support such as small group intervention.
Intensive – identifying and supporting individual students who require assessment and intensive/individual intervention from the Speech-Language Pathologist and follow up programs with a teacher aide.
